Glycemic Index Diet

By sawwatson at 2010-12-24 00:57:08
All carbohydrates are not created equal when the evidence is examined. Some, such as pure glucose, are absorbed quickly and create a rapid, strong rise in both blood sugar and insulin. Others (such as brown rice) are absorbed much more slowly and produce only a modest blood sugar and insulin response. The proponents of the low-GI diet claim that eating foods in the latter category will enhance weight loss and improve health. However, as we shall see, there is as yet no solid evidence that low-GI diets enhance weight loss.

It appears that one way to keep your insulin levels normal is to maintain a gradual, steady release of glucose into the bloodstream, while avoiding the surge caused by high glycemic foods. This seems to be more easily accomplished by eating foods that are lower on the glycemic index and therefore, digest more slowly. This is particularly important for pre-diabetics, diabetics and those trying to lose weight.

But an important 2006 American Heart Association (AHA) review of studies found that soy protein and isoflavone supplement pills do not really have any decisive effects on cholesterol or heart disease prevention. Reducing consumption of saturated fats and trans-fatty acids is the first essential step in managing cholesterol levels through a diabetes diet. Low-fat diets that are high in whole grains, fiber, legumes, and fresh produce offer health advantages for cholesterol control.

Most fruits are in middle of the low range on the glycemic index. While fruits tend to have a high level of fructose, a type of simple sugar, it takes you body a while to break it down and convert it into glucose. The result is that most fruits are good choices. Two exceptions are bananas and pineapple which tend to rank in upper reaches of the moderate range. These foods are not prohibited in the glycemic index diet, but should be eaten in moderation and also in combination with other lower ranked foods.

It is often possible that certain foods that are low in Glycemic index are high in things you really need to watch, like saturated fat. This is true especially in the case of meat. Also, there are some foods, like certain fruits, that are higher on the Glycemic index but contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants essential for longevity and good health. Definitely eat them, but consider doing so in moderation and compensate by focusing on low GI foods for the rest of the meal.

Foods that should be avoided are those that are high refined carbohydrate. It is a good idea to avoid anything white when you are on a glycemic index diet This includes potatoes, bananas, sugared foods, white flour foods and white rice. These are all high in the glycemic index and should be avoided, especially by anyone who is watching their weight or their blood sugar levels.

Well don't wonder, it's not. This diet wasn't even designed to be a weight loss diet when it was first conceived. It was designed to help people with diabetes stabilize their blood sugar levels. This is a life and death matter to diabetics, so care was taken to do it right.

The big surprise came when diabetics who previously had difficulty with diets just like you do, began to shed tons of pounds. And they did so far more rapidly than ever before.

You see the relationship between what you eat, and the weight you gain has much more to do with the cycles of blood sugar content in your blood stream that many had recognized.

While calories still count, the trigger to weight gain and loss is now clearly understood to be a matter of how fast your body burns the carbohydrates you eat. Some burn quickly, others slowly. When your blood is too sweet with sugars, automatic processes in your body shove the excess sugar into your fat banks.

A low glycemic index diet will help to reduce insulin levels and the body's resistance to insulin. You should always have foods that have a low glycemic index in your diet because they help you to have better long-term health. You don't have to eat only low glycemic foods because you can simply substitute one high glycemic food, such as potatoes, with a low glycemic food, such as pasta.
