Causes of Epilepsy

By sawwatson at 2010-12-13 01:30:54
Epilepsy is a condition of the nervous system that has the ability to stimulate an abnormal amount of electricity activity that will come about within a person's brain. This health condition has the power to be caused by tumors, an infection in the brain, or by a certain amount of brain damage from head trauma. Though a good deal research has been done there are several cases in which the cause is not known.

During a whole brain seizure, a veritable "explosion" of electrical activity afflicts the entire brain. These are known as tonic-clonic seizures or, in an earlier parlance, grand mal seizures.

During these seizures, the person loses consciousness, no longer aware of anything around him. The seizure can last only a few minutes, or longer. He often loses control of his bladder. When he "wakes," he has no memory of anything happening to him.

However, an intensive drive is a must to detect any lesion in the brain which could account for an epileptic attack, the reason being, that if the cause of epilepsy is detected, it is usually treatable, and, therefore, the patient will be cured forever, and thus may not need a long course of. antiepileptic drugs.

The most significant cause for epilepsy and seizures is considered as head trauma. Even though it has been widely accepted that when a remote injury which has occurred in previously could cause epilepsy, well there's no confirmation given as to how long or what kind of this injury should be. However, it is commonly known that epilepsy risk can boost up substantially when there're penetrating or say, open wound.

Tonic clonic seizures - This considered to be extremely intense among every kind of seizures, they could be characterized through lack of consciousness, body shivering and stiffening and have no control on bladder or at times tongue biting.

If every brain's area is disturbed by non-standard electrical activity, then it might result in generalized seizure. It means that their lack of consciousness or may be consciousness is impaired. Frequently every individual's legs and arms stiffen and later jerk rhythmically.

It should be ensured that the neck of the patient is straight, and his tie and other clothes should be loosened. He should be turned to one side, and a spoon should be placed in between the back teeth so that the tongue is not bitten. If there is any debris nearby, it should be removed so that the patient may not injure himself. The jaw, if tightly closed, should not be forced open to insert the spoon. It should be checked that there is no injury to the head.

However, head injuries, at all ages, should be avoided, so as to prevent the occurrence of traumatic epilepsy, both following the injury or later. The use of helmets is advisable, especially while traveling on two-wheelers. However, while driving cars or any other vehicle, all precautions must be taken to safeguard against accidents.

While doctors have not yet uncovered a cause for epilepsy, it is common knowledge in the medical community that most seizures are brought on by stress. Knowing this, massage therapy seems a viable treatment method, due to its relaxing nature. Massage helps increase blood flow and release tension throughout the body, contributing to a more relaxed state.

As with human epilepsy, canine epilepsy cannot be cured. However, owners can take measures to reduce the severity and frequency of a dog's seizures. There are many opinions over the best way to manage canine epilepsy. Therefore, it is wise for owners to familiarize themselves with the treatment options and make a decision based on their dog's specific symptoms.

Derived from the Greek, epilepsy means 'to be seized by forces from without'. It is a symptom of brain malfunction that can be caused by diverse disease processes (such as brain tumors or infection) by head injury, or by genetic inheritance, though in many cases no cause can be found.
