Prevent Heat Exhaustion

By sawwatson at 2010-12-02 03:12:59
The upcoming warm summer months can provide many opportunity for us to spend our time outdoors doing things that we like. While it can be some of the best months ahead for outdoor enthusiasts, it can quickly turn dangerous for us if we do not take care of ourselves under the sun.

Heat is exhaustion causes dizziness, weakness, nausea and can potentially cause the individual to faint or pass out. This poses great danger in worukplaces in which employees are consistently operating heavy machinery. If an individual passes out for even one second their life could be in great danger.

Heat exhaustion and stroke can ruin a family fun day and cause serious health problems. Heat exhaustion left untreated can cause heat stroke, which can be paralyzing and lethal. The best way to ruin your outing is for someone to have a heat stroke.

The people at risk are outdoor workers, elderly and the young. This condition can affect anyone at anytime. Even some medications could potentiate the effects of dehydration in the heat leading to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. A discussion with your doctors concerning your medications and heat is very important. Another risk factor would be drinking alcohol or caffeine in high heat because it also promotes dehydration. This increases chances of heat exhaustion.

As we trudge through the dog days of summer here in Michigan, the temperature regularly soars above 90 degrees with humidity levels of equal value. Sometimes the air seems so thick you could cut slices through it with a knife, with each breath seeming to take ten times the effort to get into your lungs as it does on a cool day.

If you've ever had a headache when it was hot, you know that it is double trouble. High temperatures can cause many problems, including a couple of types of head pain. It's important to know what both are and how to deal with them.

Heat and headaches aren't the only ways weather affects us in a physical sense. Changes in barometric pressure and cold can be problematic as well. Here are some things to look for and how to deal with them.

Lakesides and beachfronts just have a way of attracting cabins. If your cabin is near a lake or the ocean, take advantage. Your lake or beach probably has a Web site. A quick Internet search can help you find postings for activities, classes, equipment rental, boat cruises and of course the local rules and regulations.

New to boating? Never fear. Info pages abound on the web for beginning and aspiring boaters. Or check out the United States Power Squadrons, a national nonprofit committed to safe boating education.

In periods of warm weather, many people take advantage of the hot, sunny conditions to spend time outside, playing sports, exercising, or vacationing. Unfortunately, these hot conditions can lead to a range of heat-related illnesses.

When working or otherwise spending time outdoors in the heat, it is important to drink plenty of water and to take breaks in the shade. No matter what your activity, it is important to be aware of the risk of dangerous heat-related conditions.

If a person does not get medical treatment immediately, a stroke can even result in death. Sadly, many victims are young athletes who become overexerted in hot conditions and are not provided with adequate breaks from physical activities. Other victims are those who work outside in hot conditions, such as at constructions sites.

It is important for supervisors, coaches, bosses, and others to ensure that workers take care of themselves and understand the importance of frequent breaks and hydration.
