Causes of Graves Disease

By sawwatson at 2010-11-22 01:35:52
These symptoms can come on suddenly, or they can gradually appear over a long period of time. Often, a stressful life event, or an injury, or an illness can bring these symptoms to the surface. But, after diagnosis, the person is often able to look back and notice these symptoms have been there for a while.

Graves' disease is the only kind of hyperthyroidism that has inflammation of the eyes, swelling of the tissues around the eyes, and bulging of the eyes. Graves-Basedow disease, also known simply as Graves' disease.Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease caused by antibodies that mimic the effects of the hormone thyroid-stimulating hormone produced by the pituitary gland.

Graves disease is an autoimmune disorder that involves overactivity of the thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism). It occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland and causes it to overproduce the hormone thyroxine. he other causes of thyroid hormone excess are described in other sections of this book.

Excess thyroid hormone causes a widespread disturbance in metabolism, since thyroid hormone effectively regulates the metabolic level in the body. Several factors can influence a person's susceptibility to Graves' disease. Hormone levels are probably important in the initiation of the disease.

Graves’s disease is caused by an abnormal immune system response that attacks the thyroid gland, and causes too much production of thyroid hormones. Risk factors are being a woman over 20 years old, although the disorder may arise at any age and may involve men as well. Normally, the symptoms of Graves' disease are identical to the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, a condition that can be caused by Graves' disease. Classic symptoms comprise an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), anxiety, heat intolerance, weight loss, sweating, diarrhea, tremors, palpitations and exophthalmos.

Hyperthyroidism is also known as thyrotoxicosis or an overactive thyroid. It occurs when the thyroid gland release too much thyroxine. The thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck. The gland wraps around the windpipe and has a shape that is similar to a butterfly formed by two wings and attached by a middle part.

This abnormally high level of thyroid hormone typically speeds up the body's metabolism. Metabolism is the chemical and physical processes that create the substances and generate the energy needed for cell function, growth, and division.

It is usually associated with other autoimmune endocrinopathies. Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder and it may be occur by the production of auto antibodies that attach to and then stimulate thyroid hormone receptors on the thyroid gland. A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland and it may be occur due to result of increased stimulation or a response to increased metabolic demand.
